Abstract

The article examines the problem of technological progress by comparing Friedrich Dessauer’s concept of the metacosmos with Yuk Hui’s concept of cosmotechnics. The authors propose treating these concepts as descriptions of different dimensions of technological progress. The study is grounded in P.K. Engelmeyer’s concept of the technical worldview, according to which technology is understood as inventive activity preceding science, as the art of fulfilling desires, and as the practice of satisfying needs based on conscious or unconscious dispositions of desire, knowledge, and skill. Technological progress is defined as the increasing complexity of the systems that humans take into account, construct, and use in cognition, activity, and communication. Complexity can increase along two dimensions: vertical and horizontal. The vertical dimension of progress involves increasing the complexity of systems available to humans, identifying a hierarchy of capacities that enable cognition, activity, and communication, and transforming the subject itself. The concept of “vertical progress” expresses the internal logic of technological development: the processes of supplementing and replacing human sensory, rational, and intellectual capacities in the construction of artificial habitats and the pursuit of such ultimate goals as liberation from natural determination, superiority over nature, and human deification. The horizontal dimension concerns the use of new artificial objects under specific historical conditions. “Horizontal progress” denotes not invention as such but the application of technical objects and thus expresses the external logic of technological development, which is shaped by contingent cultural and historical circumstances. In anthropology, the vertical and horizontal dimensions correspond to the concepts of technical tendency and technical fact; in the philosophy of technology, they correspond to metacosmos and cosmotechnics. The article concludes that metacosmos and cosmotechnics should be treated as complementary concepts describing technological progress as a unity of the universal logic of invention and the contingent cultural-historical forms of its realization.
