The Academy for Research into the Humanities is a non-governmental, non-profit scientific institution. Established in 1995, it aims to unite the research efforts of prominent Russian and international scholars working across various domains of humanities, economics, and ecology. The Academy for Research into the Humanities is the owner of the Russian Journal of Philosophical Sciences.
The Academy's membership had included world-renowned Russian and international scholars such as S.S. Averintsev, A.Y. Gurevich, M.L. Gasparov, V.S. Bibler, E.M. Meletinsky, V.S. Stepin, H.G. Gadamer, P. Ricoeur, R. Rorty, S. Grof, J. Baudrillard, and C. Castaneda.
The Academy operates on the premise that humanitarian knowledge permeates all spheres of social life. The innumerable facets of human existence are reflected in its diverse manifestations—philosophy, history, philology, law, morality, art, religion, pedagogy, psychology, sociology, education, upbringing, and enlightenment.
As natural and technical sciences evolved, there emerged a tendency to relegate humanitarian knowledge to a secondary position. This was particularly evident in Soviet academic science, which undervalued the significance of humanities, the inner world of the individual, and the subjective aspects of human existence. The concept of establishing a specialized philosophical science of human nature was considered methodologically flawed, and humanitarian research was dismissed as an idealistic distortion of reality, with the humanitarian approach deemed abstract.
In contemporary Russia, progressive democratic transformations are actively occurring as the nation builds a constitutional state that prioritizes human and individual rights.
Consequently, Russian science, like society as a whole, requires understanding the laws of human existence not only at the civilizational level but also at the personal level. Disciplines such as philosophical anthropology, cultural studies, psychology, ecology, ethics, sociology, and conflict studies have gained prominence.
The Academy's objective is to comprehensively study these subjects, familiarize the scientific community with classical humanitarian thought, promote the study of humanities, develop practical programs for resolving conflicts between individuals and society, prevent social, ecological, and other crises, and mitigate their consequences.
Currently, perspectives are shifting: public consciousness is reassessing the significance and potential of humanitarian science.
We are witnessing the emergence of a new paradigm in humanitarian research, which prioritizes human beings, their inner world, and all aspects of their activity, including those that threaten human existence. Global humanitarian research encompasses diverse currents and directions. This diversity is reflected in domestic science, where alongside philosophy, psychology, sociology, and history, increased importance is being attributed to philosophical anthropology, cultural studies, conflict studies, bioethics, ecology, and other disciplines. In supporting this new humanitarian paradigm, the Academy aims to nurture and develop relatively new disciplines while adhering to the principle of methodological diversity. The Academy will introduce the scientific community to both contemporary works by domestic and foreign scholars and the classical heritage of global humanitarian thought.
The Academy for Research into the Humanities works in close collaboration with Russian Academy of Sciences institutes. It aims to unite the research efforts of distinguished Russian and international humanities scholars. The Academy conducts fundamental and applied research across various humanitarian disciplines—philosophy, history, ecology, psychology, sociology, morality, law, education, cultural studies, economics, conflict studies, political science, demography and migration, and other branches of humanitarian knowledge.
The focus on applied research stems from the need to address numerous pressing issues in our society. Therefore, a significant portion of the Academy's research has practical applications. Academy specialists develop and implement methodologies for resolving social, geopolitical, interethnic, ecological, and other conflicts, and propose solutions to challenges related to population migration and similar issues.
A crucial aspect of the Academy's activities is the preparation and organization of a modern system of continuous education, the training of broadly educated humanities specialists, and the development of new educational and methodological programs.
Among the Academy's priority tasks is scientific and organizational activity in developing humanitarian projects in conjunction with state and public organizations. The Academy collaborates with research institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, relevant committees of the Federation Council and State Duma of the Russian Federation, the Russian Academy of Education, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, other ministries and departments, scientific institutions, and educational establishments.
